Border Crossings
5 performances over 5 days, Various materials, 2010
Border Crossings was a series of performances held over 5 days. The title refers not only to the idea of moving between countries but also the physical and mental boundaries crossed when undertaking long durational performance.
In the first performance beetroot juice dripped slowly on the head of the artist, showering her in an iconic symbol of Ukrainian culture. Other performance saw the artist scrubbing white sheets for five hours, sitting at the desk for five hours holding a candle in each hand, smashing concrete slabs containing envelopes with letters inside and playing word games with another performer speaking in English Ukrainian and German blurring the lines between nationalities, understanding and comprehension.
