Portrait of the Artist (2018)

Digital print on archival rag 50cm X 55cm

Portrait of the Artist (2018) explores the artist’s relationship to their Ukrainian heritage while growing up in Australia. With the use of traditional Ukrainian dress that has been substituted with Ficifolia instead of Ukrainian flowers, the artist dresses up and performs her inherited cultures. Cradling a bundle of wheat symbolising the Holodomor, the artist references the histories of post WW2 Ukrainian migrants and the trauma they brought to their new home during migration. The ribbons in iconic green and gold, acknowledges the pressures on migrants to adopt “Australian values” while also becoming implicit in the continued colonisation of Aboriginal lands.
